The governments Office For Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) have set up three grant schemes for the installation of EV Charge Points. The grant available for the public sector, such as local councils, is the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme. The On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme provides grant funding for local authorities towards the cost of buying and installing on-street residential EV Chargers for electric vehicles.
The grant can provide up to 75% of the cost of procuring and installing charge points with local authorise funding the remained costs through public and private sources. As of January 2018 there is still £4.8 million available in grants, this would see thousands of extra charge points installed across the country.
OLEV will provide up to £7,500 per charge point installation. Applegarth Engineering is one of the few government approved businesses able to install EV Charging points under the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme. A local authority can submit a grant application form, and once approval has been received an EV Charger Installer can install new EV Charge Points.
Around a third of homes do not have off-street parking. For those living in homes without off-street parking the likelihood of making the switch to an electric vehicle is lower than those with off-street parking because of the charging inconveniences. Without an off-street parking charge point it makes it extremely difficult to charge your vehicle overnight.
