Southwark has become the first London borough to install electric vehicle EV charge points on lampposts. The local council has partnered with EV charge point manufacturer Char.gy to deliver a network of 50 lampost EV chargers across the borough. Southwark council has said putting EV chargers on lampposts is a “great option” as they use existing infrastructure.
The installation of the lamppost EV charge points comes after Southwark councils successful bid to join the Go Ultra Low project. This project helps to prepare cities for the switch to electric vehicles. As a result of the successful bid, Southwark council was awarded £300,000 towards the cost of installation of the EV chargers.
Lamppost EV charge points are a great idea for local authorities that are looking to offer a solution to residents, who do not have access to off-street parking. London is the ideal place to install these lamppost EV chargers, as there is limited space for new street furniture.
The EV chargers designed and manufactured by Char.gy are rated at 7.7kW. However, these units are reduced to around 5.3kW charging speed when installed to a lamppost due to the limited power available. The Char.gy lamppost EV chargers can be used on a pay-as-you-go basis or you can take out a contract.
