This month the Department for Transport announced that all EV charge points must become ‘Smart’ by July 2019. This means EV charge points must be able to be remotely accessed, and capable of receiving, interpreting and reacting to a signal.
The aim is to boost EV technology, cut costs for consumers, and ultimately encourage more people to convert to electric vehicles, leading to a cleaner, greener future.
One important feature of ‘Smart’ charging is that it allows you to delay charging until off peak times,or reduce the output, enabling local networks to cope with the rising number of EV charging points as well as allowing consumers to have more control over the cost of their energy bills.
The Electric Vehicle Home charge Scheme is set to continue, offering a contribution of up to 75% of the cost of a single point home EV charger, up to the cost of £500. The government aims to make EV chargers easier to use and cut costs in order to attract a new market of electric vehicle users, conclusively leading to a rapid decrease in CO2 emissions.
An increasing number of energy providers, for example Scottish Power are also beginning to offer tariffs that are specifically designed for EV drivers. These tariffs allow consumers to reduce their energy usage by powering their EV during cheaper times of the day.
Roads minister Jesse Norman states “The government wants the UK to be the best place in the world to build and own an electric vehicle, and through leadership and innovation it is paving the way to a zero emission future”.
