The UK government has announced that it will be releasing new EV charge points that will hopefully become as recognisable and iconic as the UK’s red post boxes and black cabs. The new design will be unveiled later this year at COP26 in Glasgow.
So, how will the new EV charge points impact everyday Britons? Below we consider the benefits of public EV charge point installation.
Why is EV Charge Point Installation Important?
The UK government is prioritising public EV charge point installation to incentivise Britons to make the switch to electric vehicles. The government has set big green goals, including banning the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2030 and reducing carbon emissions down to net-zero by 2050.
It’s no secret that electric vehicles are more environmentally friendly, but switching to electric vehicles does present some challenges. The main concern that many new EV drivers have is how they will charge their new electric vehicle. Let’s face it, nobody wants to be stranded in the middle of nowhere with an empty EV battery. Therefore a network of public EV charge points is the obvious solution.
With more EV charge points across the UK, EV drivers can top-up their batteries conveniently as and when they need to. However, public EV charge points will still not act as the primary method of powering your electric vehicle. To give you an example, you aren’t going to spend 14 hours at a public charge point to charge your empty EV battery.
Public EV charge points paired with home EV charge point installation makes owning an electric vehicle convenient and affordable, while benefiting the environment.
How is the UK Approaching EV Charge Point Installation?
The UK government has taken significant steps to increasing EV charge point installation across the country. A few years ago, the lack of EV charge points discouraged the public from embracing electric vehicles. Today, there are over 24,000 public EV charge points available in the UK, with more than 430,000 electric vehicles on UK roads.
By 2022, EV chargers could be a British emblem too. According to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, the new charge points will be both iconic and accessible. When speaking about the new design, he said:
“Excellent design plays a key role in supporting our transition to zero-emission vehicles, which is why I want to see EV charge points that are as iconic and recognisable as the British phone box, London bus, or black cab.
With less than three months to go until COP26, we continue to put the UK at the forefront of the design, manufacture and use of zero-emission vehicles and their charging infrastructure as we build back greener and call on countries around the world to similarly accelerate the transition to electric vehicles.”
The government has also taken steps to make owning an electric vehicle more inclusive by creating standards for EV charge points. The new standards will ensure that Britons with disabilities will have reliable access to EV charge points too.
