Electric cars are very close to becoming a mainstream mode of transport in Europe. 2020 and 2021 are widely expected to be the tipping point for the electric vehicle market.
According to a report from the European Federation for Transport and Environment, the number of electric cars manufactured across the European Union is “about to surge to new heights” following numerous years of “timid growth”.
Only until recently, the electric car market was limited to a niche market with a small number of manufacturers and consumers taking the plunge. However, leading car manufacturers are preparing to launch electric cars to the mass market, according to the report.
The number of electric car models on offer is expected to triple from around 60 at the end of 2018 to about 176 in 2020. By 2021 this figure is expected to reach 214 electric car models.
In 2020 new EU laws, capping C02 emissions for new cars at 95g/km come into force. Car manufacturers are increasing their production of electric cars to meet these targets.
The report states that due to Brexit there is “huge uncertainty as to whether the production plans will be delivered” in the UK.
