Maybe you are considering an electric vehicle or have already made the switch? Either way owning and driving is very similar to traditional vehicles but there are some key differences that you need to know!
Yes! You still need an MOT!
In the major of vehicles, if it is over 3 years old it has to undergo a yearly MOT test and pass to be road legal. An electrical vehicle, like traditional petrol or diesel cars still have to pass an MOT. The only exemptions are electric goods and commercial vehicles such as tractors and milk floats or if the car or motorcycle was produced before 1960. The main EV MOT test difference is, electric vehicles are exempt from the emissions testing part of the vehicle safety test. The absence of a petrol or diesel combustion engine does not mean your electric vehicle doesn’t need maintenance and all the regular safety checks. You should be able to have your EV MOT at the EV dealership or most garages. An electric vehicle MOT is to check your car is in good working order, operating correctly, and checks for any rust on mounting points or brackets. The MOT vehicle inspector will check:
- Lights
- Seat belts
- Windscreen wipers
- Windscreen integrity
- Steering
- Wheel alignment
- Tyre wear & depth
- Suspension
- Brakes
- Washer fluid
- Mirrors
- Horn
