The digital mapping resource Google Maps, has just launched a new function which will deliver real-time electric vehicle charging point information to users across the UK. Google Maps has gathered network data from major EV charge point providers, Chargemaster by BP and Pod Point Network in the UK. The launch of this new Google Maps function is to meet the needs of electric vehicle drivers.
“If you’ve ever driven to an electric vehicle (EV) charging station only to find that all ports are occupied, you know that you could end up waiting in line for anywhere between minutes to hours, which can really put a damper on your day when you have places to go and things to do. Starting today, you can see the real time availability of charging ports in the US and UK, right from Google Maps. So you know if chargers are available before you head to a station. Simply search for ‘EV charging stations’ to see up to date information.” (Alex Donaldson – Product Manager at Google)
This new feature will let users see the usual Google Maps data such as photos, ratings and reviews as well as:
Location of EV charge points
Number of EV charge points available
Charging speeds
Port types
To access this new feature you only have to update or download the Google Maps app, either on iOS or Android if you have not already. Google has promised the desktop version of Google Maps will have the new EV charge point search function feature soon. Any EV related search terms such as ‘EV charging’ or ‘charging station’ will give local EV charge point locations. The additional information such as ratings and numbers of charge points will be incredibly useful to EV owners and drivers.
