In this blog post we answer some of the most common questions we are asked about solar panels and solar pv systems. If you can’t find the answer you are looking for please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
What is solar pv?
Solar PV stands for solar photovoltaics. This is the name of the technology that converts light into electricity, for domestic and commercial use.
How does solar pv technology work?
Solar PV systems use cells to convert sunlight into electricity. The photovoltaic cells are made up of one or two layers of a semi-conducting material (usually silicon). The solar panel creates electricity when the photons from the sunlight react with the electrons in the semi conducting material.
Do I need a south facing roof for solar panels?
Solar panels work best when they are on a south facing roof. However, solar panels will still produce electricity if they are facing east or west.
Are solar panels high maintenance?
Solar panels are very low maintenance. Rain usually does the job of washing away any dirt. If it doesn’t you can give them a quick spray with a hose. It is important to make sure nothing is on top of the solar panels, which could be blocking out any sunlight.
What is the feed-in tariff?
The feed in tariff is a government scheme designed to promote the up-take of renewable and low-carbon electricity generation technologies. You will receive payments quarterly, from your electricity supplier, for the electricity your solar panels have generated and exported.
Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?
Planning permission for the solar panels depends on the property and the nature of the installation. Buildings that are protected or listed will require permission from your local authority. Solar panels with a capacity over 3.6KW need permission from the District Network Operator.
Will the solar panels work without constant sunlight?
Yes, the solar panels will even work on overcast and winter days. On sunny days the solar panels will generate more electricity.
Should I get roof-mounted or ground-mounted solar panels?
Roof-mounted solar panels are generally less expensive as they do not require structural support. They also make use of underutilised space on your roof. Ground-mounted solar panels are your best option if your roof is not suitable for solar panels. Solar panels that are ground-mounted can be easily adjusted, to face the sun, to increase efficiency.
If I install solar panels can I come off the electricity grid?
Solar panels will not provide you with electricity 24 hours a day. This is as they only produce electricity during daylight hours. To come off the electricity grid completely you would need an alternative energy source, for the hours your solar panels aren’t generating electricity, or a battery storage system.
What are the benefits of installing solar panels?
Solar panels have numerous benefits. Solar panels can reduce your electricity bills and even earn you money under the feed-in-tariff. Besides the financial benefits, solar panels can help to reduce your carbon foot print.
