Who Are SSE?
SSE (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks) is a UK energy provider involved in generation, transmission and supply of electricity. They are currently investing £4 million in low-carbon energy infrastructure such as wind farms. SSE have been members of the EV100 initiative since July 2019. The EV100 initiative was introduced by the global non-profit The Climate Group to help large companies to switch their commercial fleets’ to fully-electric vehicles.
Switch To EV
SSE is committed to the initiative to switch their commercial fleet from petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles to fully-electric vehicles by 2030. They currently have 3,500 vehicles in operation that they are aiming to switch all to EV (electric vehicles). At 20 of SSE’s main sites, they have installed over 100 EV charge points. The start of 2020 saw the first electric vans in operation.
Brian McLaren – SSE Director of Group Change – “As a major fleet operator across the UK and Ireland, the EV rollout is in line with SSE’s ambition to deliver low carbon infrastructure in a sustainable way and links to our wider business goal of helping accommodate 10 million electric vehicles in Great Britain by 2030.”
Why Do Commercial Fleets Need To Go Electric?
Commercial businesses own or lease over half of all new registered vehicles on UK roads. The Climate Group argues that with such a large proportion of vehicles in use on UK roads being for business use, they have a large environmental impact. It is imperative that commercial fleets switch to electric vehicles. Switching to electric vans or cars will help businesses green credentials. The UK government has introduced grants, tax breaks and reduced servicing costs in a bid to encourage businesses to make the switch to EV.
