The electric car revolution in Scotland is under threat due to the lack of EV charge points. New figures show that in Scotland there is only 1 public electric car EV charge point for every 4,300 drivers. Currently, there is only plans to add 71 public EV charge points to the existing nationwide network of 703 EV chargers, by 2032. Researchers have warned that there will be a chronic shortfall of EV charge. This is due to factors such as the phasing out of cars with traditional combustion engines, by automotive manufacturers and the plan to stop them being manufactured all together by 2040.
It is expected that, the majority of electric car drivers in Scotland will have an EV charge point installed at their home or workplace. However, a good public EV charging infrastructure is needed for drivers who need to ‘charge up’ mid journey and for those who don’t have access to off street parking, where they can install their own EV charge point.
At present Glasgow has the largest number of available EV charge points at 93. Currently, there is only plans to install 8 more by 2020. In South Lanarkshire there are 90 charge points, with no plans to install anymore charge points. Edinburgh also does not plan to add to existing 43 EV chargers. In comparison, Dundee is planning to install 22 more EV chargers to add to their existing 56.
The director of Friends of the Earth Scotland, Dr Richard Dixon said to the Daily Express “These figures show a worrying disconnect between the Scottish Government’s excellent ambition to phase out fossil fuelled vehicles and the transport planning of local authorities. Councils must be encouraged and supported by the Government to drive the transition to electric vehicles”.
