In the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, residents will be able to borrow an electric vehicle (EV) for up to 6 months free of charge. The trial starts in March 2019 and will run for 6 months, offering residents the chance to experience life with an EV. Participants in the trial can choose between a Renault Zoe R110 or a family sized hatchback Hyundai IONIQ.
“By 2040 all new vehicles will have to be emission free. By giving our residents a chance to trial this technology now, we are preparing them and our borough for the future.Ensuring we have the right infrastructure for EVs now and in the future is vital. This trial will allow us to see how a charging solution of this kind could work for Royal Borough residents.” (Cllr David Coppinger – Lead Member For Planning & Health)
The trial scheme by the council has been launched in collaboration with Connected Kerb (CKL), a smart cities platform provider. The electric vehicle consultants have worked with Transport For London, installing 10,000 smart docking stations for London Cycle Hire. Connected Kerb will install 5 kerside electric ‘drive-up’ points on Alma Road, Windsor for those participating in the trail to use. The EV points will offer EV charging, IoT sensor and ultra fast Wi-Fi, which will gather environmental, weather and traffic monitoring data for local authorities. All of Connected Kerbs EV charge points are manufactured using recycled materials.
“We are thrilled to be able to give residents of the Royal Borough the chance to trial an EV and test our unique kerbside charging points. As we move nearer to the government deadline of 2040, it’s vital that the Great British public have the chance trial this exciting technology and that the infrastructure needed to support this change is put in place. We are delighted that Royal Borough residents will be able to test and benefit from the trial.” Paul Ayres – COO at Connected Kerb)
